Paddington Grind has been on this corner for a quarter of a century. Long enough that nobody around here uses the full name — you're just going down to the Grind. Prams that were parked out front are now teenagers ordering their own iced lattes.

The reputation was built on three simple things, and we haven't touched the recipe: coffee people cross the road for, food worth the walk, and a welcome that makes you feel like a regular before you are one. Everything is cooked fresh to order — and if you want it your way, just say so. Off-menu is not a problem here.

If you've come a long way to find the Australia people actually live in, this is it. A flat white at a footpath table, a bacon and egg roll while the street wakes up, somebody's kelpie asleep under the next stool. No harbour views, no tour buses — just the ordinary weekday rhythm of a Sydney neighbourhood, which is the part visitors almost never get to see. Order the way the locals do: a flat white and the avo on sourdough. And yes, we'll do Vegemite on your toast if you're game — the trick is to go thin.

The coffee gets most of the attention, but ask anyone here about the hot chocolate. Eastside Radio called ours the best in Sydney on air — proper chocolate, properly steamed milk, no shortcuts. Worth ordering even if you came in for a flat white.

The lady who runs it today took a long way round herself. She came to Sydney for a master's at the University of Sydney and spent the years after it in a senior role at a listed fintech company — spreadsheets, screens, quarterly targets. One morning she decided that wasn't the whole of a life, and went looking for something harder and far more human. She took the keys to the Grind.

These days she knows the regulars by name, how they take their coffee, and what the dog is called. She'll tell you the best part of the job is the light that comes down Oxford Street just before close — the reason she's still here, and why the door is open to your dog as much as to you. Pull up a stool. You'll be a regular by the second visit.
